The Importance of Being Earnest is a tour de force of comedy, misidentification and outright farce. Set in England in the late Victorian era, the story follows two young gentlemen who decide to bend the truth in order to add some excitement to their lives. Both using the pseudonym „Ernest“, they fall in love with two different women and a comedy of errors ensues. When everyone comes together in the country, their deceptions are discovered – threatening to spoil their romantic pursuits. The Importance of Being Ernest has proved Wilde‘s most enduringly popular play.
Unter dem Vorwand, sich um seinen Bruder kümmern zu müssen, entflieht Jack dem biederen Landleben. Der „Bruder“ aber ist niemand anderer als Jack selbst, der so unter dem Namen Ernst ein fröhlichfreies Doppelleben führen kann. Jacks Komplize Algernon entkommt seinen Verpflichtungen, indem er zu einem gleichfalls erfundenen Freund Bunbury aufs Land fährt und sich allen möglichen amourösen Eskapaden hingibt, bis er sich unsterblich in Cecily verliebt. Jacks Herzensdame Gwendolen verliebt sich nur in ihn, weil Jack sich ihr als Ernst vorstellt. Sie hatte sich geschworen, nur einen Mann zu heiraten, der Ernst heißt. Aber ernst soll Ernst dann doch nicht sein, aber alles, was zählt, ist, Ernst zu sein.
